Walailak University (WU) executives have continued their journey to Kazakhstan from April 8 to 11, in an effort to strengthen international collaboration with universities in Central Asia, advancing student and staff mobility, and laying the groundwork for a dual degree in international business.

This visit marks the second leg of the WU team's journey, following their previous trip to Uzbekistan last week.

President of WU Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, together with Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology Assistant Professor Dr. Monthian Setkit, Chairperson of the International Management Graduate Program from the School of Accountancy and Finance Assistant Professor Dr. Pankeawta Lakkanawanit, and Director of the Center for International Affairs Assistant Professor Dr. Patnarin Supakorn visited Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages (KAUIR&WL), located in Kazakhstan’s largest city of Almaty, on April 8, 2024.

The WU team met with KAUIR&WL’s Vice-Rector for Strategic Development Professor Dana Kunanbayeva, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Professor Assel Chaklikova, and Vice-Rector for International Cooperation Professor Zhanar Zhyltyrova. Discussions centered around establishing a dual degree program in international business, bilateral agreements on student and staff mobility, as well as joint research projects, and the exchange of scientific data.

The WU team also met with KAUIR&WL students keen on joining the short exchange program at WU's International College and had an opportunity to visit the Ablai Khan Museum, the Museum of Ethnography, and the reading room.

On April 9, 2024, WU Executives proceeded to Almaty Management University (AlmaU), a private higher educational institution in Kazakhstan renowned for its management programs.

The team met AlmaU’s Rector Dr. Gulnara Kurenkeyeva, Director of the International Cooperation Department Nursulu Kiyash, and Head of the International Development Department Aliya Akpayeva to discuss cooperation on international short exchange programs and student and staff mobility.

Currently, WU has approximately 204 full-time international students from over 28 countries at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The university has also experienced significant growth in its international collaboration with researchers, which has risen from 41.6 percent in 2022 to 55.2 percent in 2023, and to 62.2 percent in 2024 (as of April 10), reflecting the success of its internationalization efforts.
