TED Fund Supports Walailak University in the Development of Trichoderma Five Plus, Helping Solve Plant Diseases for Farmers

TED Fund has supported Walaibiocontrol Co., Ltd. in the development of a prototype of Trichoderma Five Plus, an international standard biological product, to assist Thai farmers in solving plant diseases caused by fungi. This product was designed to be user-friendly in the form of spore powder, safe for all users and consumers, and environmentally friendly.

On September 12th, 2023,   Associate Professor Dr. Warin Intana, a lecturer from the School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry at Walailak University, and an advisor for Walaibiocontrol, along with Ms. Prattana Attamanee, Managing Director of Walaibiocontrol, welcomed Dr. Chanwit Treedej, Manager of the Technology and Innovation-Based Enterprise Development Fund or TED Fund under Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, to follow up on the Trichoderma Five Plus international standard biological product project, which received a grant from the TED Youth Startup “Proof of Concept” program, at Center for Biopesticide Production and Service, Walailak University. The event was attended by representatives from the TED Fund, Walaibiocontrol, Walailak Science Park, and the media.

Ms. Prattana said, “The Trichoderma Five Plus international standard biological product, supported by the TED Fund, is a solution to help farmers address the problems they face, including crop deficiencies, damage caused by crop pests, and agricultural environmental degradation due to improper crop management. These issues result in reduced crop quality and quantity, posing risks of financial losses and sustainability challenges for farmers. The Trichoderma Five Plus, developed by Walailak Science Park, offers a solution to these challenges.”

By combining essential nutrients and microorganisms for plant growth, including Trichoderma asperellum NST-009, Metarhizium anisopliae WU-003, Beauveria bassiana WU-002, secondary nutrients important for growth (Calcium and Magnesium), and supplements for strengthening and promoting the germination of antagonistic fungal spores, and through testing at the Center for Biopesticide Production and Service, it has been demonstrated that the product can control up to 31 fungal diseases such as root rot, stem rot, anthracnose, damping off, leaf spot, and leaf blight, in 14 different types of plants, including durian, citrus, rubber, oil palm, rice, various vegetable, and ornamental plants. Additionally, it can also effectively manage plant pests such as coconut rhinoceros beetle, thrips, aphids, mealybugs, red mites, and caterpillars.

Furthermore, there are essential nutrients necessary for the growth of all types of plants that are safe for both users and consumers and environmentally friendly, meeting global standards set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and complying with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Therefore, the Trichoderma Five Plus is an outstanding biological product innovation and solution for farmers in the present day.
