Walailak University Welcomes Delegates from Showa University, Japan, Discussing Future Collaborations



Walailak University’s School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing, and International College of Dentistry welcomed delegates from Showa University, Japan, yesterday at Khaoluang Chamber, Cooperative Education Building. Research collaboration and students and staff mobility were central to the discussion.
    

     On 19 January 2022, Walailak University Vice President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surin Maisrikrod together with Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jitbanjong Tangpong, Dean of the School of Nursing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Urai Jaraeprapa, and Dean of International College of Dentistry Prof. Dr. Sittichai Koontongkaew welcomed the delegates from Showa University: Prof. Dr. Takashi Miyazaki, Showa University Vice President; Prof. Akiko Tanaka, Chairperson of Department of Nursing; Prof. Yoshinori Kagaya, Chairperson of Department of Physical Therapy; and Assoc. Prof. Yoshiko Kudo from International Exchange Center.
    
     Showa University is a comprehensive medical university in Tokyo, Japan. It was established in 1928. The university consists of 4 schools: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing and Rehabilitation Studies. Since November 2022, Showa University has started a collaboration with the School of Allied Health Science, Walailak University. Prof. Dr. Takashi Miyazaki said: “Showa University tries to be an international leader in every field whether in research, education, and medical service. Our collaboration has already started with Dean Jitbanjong since last November. Today, we try to discuss more details of our future collaboration and hope that our relationship will expand more and more.”
 
     On this occasion, Vice President Surin Maisrikrod briefed the delegates about Walailak University's progress and growth which happen rapidly during the past six years under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong. The university focuses on both quality teaching and producing world-class research. In October 2022, Walailak University entered Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 for the first time at 1501+, the university’s teaching quality can be assured by the implementation of the UK Professional Standard Frameworks (UKPSF), and the majority of research publications are in Scopus Index Q1 and Q2. Vice President Surin said: “This meeting is a very important juncture in our relationship and hopefully we can come up with more joint projects that will benefit both sides in the future.”  
 
     The meeting featured presentations of information on Walailak university’s three schools/college and the presentation of Showa university, such as curriculum design, extra-curricular activities, students’ life, research, international collaborations, etc. Currently, in 2023, the School of Allied Health Sciences has more than 10 active Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)/ collaborations with universities in many countries such as the US, Australia, China, and Japan. “I’d like to express my sincere appreciation on behalf of the School of Allied Health Science for your visit. I Hope this visit can build collaborations between Showa University and Walailak University, especially for the School of Allied Health Sciences, the School of Nursing, and the College of Dentistry. And we’re looking forward to working together under research, academic collaboration, professional training, and students and staff exchange,” said Dean Jitbanjong. “Thank you for visiting us. Hopefully, we can go visit your school, and have clinical and community practice with your school of nursing soon,” added Dean Urai.
