Walailak University students of the School of Engineering and Technology won 2 prizes from the competition for innovations in higher education at the bachelor's degree level in the National Research Expo 2022 (Thailand Research Expo 2022) held at Bangkok Convention Center central world Bangkok, Bangkok between 1-5 August 2022 under the concept “Research for the Development of the Country towards Security, Prosperity and Sustainability” as follows:
1) Gold Medal Award and Good Level Award winners, Ms. Nantiporn Thongrakchan and Ms. Natthanicha Srisubat, students majoring in Chemical Engineering, owners of the membrane contactor process for bringing back ammonium from rubber factories’ wastewater in the form of ammonium sulfate fertilizer. The project was conducted under supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Wichitpan Rongwong.
The membrane contactor process utilizes a hydrophobic membrane or membrane to separate ammonia from the wastewater of the rubber plant and the wastewater can be turned into ammonium sulfate fertilizer all in one single step.
2) Silver Medal Award winners, Ms. Pakkamai Raknarong, Ms. Narumon Sitthichen, Mr. Afham Chekabaso, and Mr. Musafpar Teh, Civil Engineering Students, owners of the innovation of mortar to prevent radiation from garnet waste. The project was conducted under supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Kittipong Khun Jariyakul.
The work is the integration of waste garnet that is a by-product of the metal polishing industry into the production of a radiation-resistant concrete, which according to testing, it was found that it can increase the protection efficiency of both gamma rays and neutrons.
