Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida Limmun, a lecturer from Mathematics and Statistics department, School of Science, Walailak University received one of the most honorable awards -The Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring.

“I am proud of this award and it is a payoff”, said the award winner, surprised and filled with joy.

After completing a master’s degree in statistics at Chulalongkorn University in 2004, Inspired by her own teachers, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida, started her teaching career as a lecturer at Walailak University in 2006 with determination to give back to society. Her goal is to transfer the knowledge in statistics which she excels at to students, hoping that they will make the most out of it. Her passion for teaching has been increasing since she believes in the impact education can have on people’s lives.

Pursuing academic and professional development, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida obtained her doctoral degree at Kasetsart University in 2012. In service to Walailak University implementing educational reform, she joined the Advance HE’s UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) introducing her to pedagogic techniques which she can apply in her teaching. She emphasized that her teaching must be student-centered enabling them to think critically, analytically, and synthetically. She assures that every student in her class shall receive equal attention, regardless of their individual differences.

“Every single student differs from another,” she mentioned. During the class, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida takes time to pause and observe students’ expression. This allows an insight into whether they need to ask questions, for example and so she can help them catch up and clear up the confusions.

Not only providing academic-related advice, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida also supports and guides students through obstacles in life when they need it.

“Sometimes, the best way to help students out is not just giving them what you think is best, but rather listening to them, make sure they are heard, and help them to be able to find causes and solutions by themselves.” she said.

When asking Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida about what she thinks is main key elements that a good teacher embodies? She pointed out that a good teacher is the one who is able to share correct and comprehensible knowledge to students so that they are equipped with what they need, and able to apply it further. “However, the knowledge and experience students gain during their study does not only come from inside the classroom but also activities, friends, and life here at the University as well.” she added.

For future goals in her career as a teacher, Asst. Prof. Dr. Wanida would like to continue what she is doing and will does her best. She aims to initiate more activities that promotes student participation and train them to master the subject both in theory and practice. She also wishes to conduct more research that make a positive impact on society, and hopefully climb a ladder in academic field.
