Advance Higher Education (Advance HE) named Walailak University a Success Story following the endorsement of the CLTHE    

Advance Higher Education (Advance HE) has announced Walailak University’s success story following the university’s championing of the initiative by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University in 2018 to nurture the “culture of teaching” characterized by teaching staff’s regular sharing of pedagogic knowledge and practices to ensure quality teaching. Staff participated in the teaching and learning development program, the Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CLTHE) program aligned with the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE (PSF). 


Advance HE elaborated on the university’s achievement with a tangible proof of over 90% of the staff gaining recognition of an Advance HE fellows in diverse fields. Currently, the university is celebrating a total of 470 lecturers, divided into 413 Fellow, 56 Senior Fellows and 1 Principal Fellow, the highest in Thailand. As a result of continuous integration of the practices, the university succeeded in reducing freshmen’s dropouts in 2020 from 30 percent to less than 2 percent. Among the teaching staff, the culture of teaching has been generalized as reflected by Walailak University’s Vice President for Global Engagement and Faculty Development, Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod. 


“There is now a culture of teaching at Walailak University. Before this work, staff did not talk about teaching, whereas now you can hear them discussing their teaching in everyday conversations. Student’s learning is at the heart of all our work, “reflected by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surin. 


Kathy Wright, who co-delivered the program alongside Andy Hudson, reported Walailak University teaching staff’s embracement of the ideas and practice illustrated through their action research group projects, poster production and evaluation. Likewise, Kathryn Harrison-Graves, Director of Membership and Accreditation at Advance HE made a remark on the university’s strategic commitment to student’s learning. 

 

 


Walailak University, a Global and Frontier Research as categorized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has recently celebrated its 30th anniversary of the university’s founding on 29th March, 2022 with several marked milestones: being the top 551-600 Asian universities, or the 19th among Thai universities by QS Asia University Rankings 2022, winning international rank of 601-800 by Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021 and scoring 4.93 out of 5 for its 2020 academic performance by a Quality Assurance Committee appointed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
