Asst.Prof.Dr. Udomsak Saengow, M.D, Director of the Research Institute for Health Sciences, Walailak University

Asst.Prof.Dr. Udomsak Saengow, M.D, Director of the Research Institute for Health Sciences, Walailak University, represents Walailak University as a university liaison in the Thailand One Health University Network National Coordinating Office (THOHUN-NCO). The Thailand One Health University Network or THOHUN is a Thailand-based network operating with respect to the globally recognized One Health concept under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Dr. Saengduen Moonsom, Lecturer of Department of Protozoology, Mahidol University. Currently, universities across Thailand have joined the network

Funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), THOHUN - under the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN)- strives to prevent the immerging and re-immerging diseases in Thailand through national and international collaborations of the network partners with respect to the One Health concept.

“The One Health concept recognizes an interconnection between people, animals, plants, and the shared environment. It is basically the idea that when animals are sick, people are susceptible to the sickness too, such as the COVID-19,” explained Asst. Prof. Dr. Udomsak.

“That’s why practitioners in the field of zoology and veterinary are Thailand’s forefront in initiating and keeping THOHUN active,” added Asst. Prof. Dr. Udomsak.

As a university liaison, Asst. Prof. Dr. Udomsak coordinates on behalf of THOHUN, activities, programs, and scholarships between the network and the university’s executives and students to publicize the updates or upcoming projects, meetings, or activities. With the network's close collaboration with and support from well-recognized institutions including United States Agency for International Development (USAID), UC Davis One Health Institute, Southeast Asia One Health University (SEAOHUN), EcoHealth Alliance, Ata Health Strategies, ICAP Global Health, Africa One Health University Network (AFROHUN), ECHO, the University of California Berkeley and University of California Irvine, students are provided an opportunity to broaden perspectives on health science through participation in Thailand and overseas.

“My job is to keep Walailak University connected with THOHUN. Over the past two years, Walailak University, School of Public Health and Akkhraratchakumari Veterinary College, in particular, has been actively engaged in a wide range of activities both on-site and online,” said Asst. Prof. Dr. Udomsak. However, in the future, besides those specializing in zoology, veterinary, and public health, THOHUN aims to encourage multidisciplinary participants to take part in activities, given all fields’ inherent involvement in the health arena.

In southeast Asia, Indonesia One Health Network (INDOHUN), Malaysia One Health Network (MYOHUN) and Vietnam One Health Network (VOHUN) also operate alongside THOHUN as SEA fellows, suggesting the network's extensive scale.
