WU turning research into the commercial product “Nora serum,” a serum extracted from mangosteen and garcinia to help reduce wrinkles, melasma, freckles, and acne.

Researchers from Walailak University developed Nora serum, a serum from mangosteen and garcinia peels extracts that has the effect of reducing wrinkles, melasma, freckles, dark spots, and acne.

Assistant Professor Dr. Morakot Chatatikhun, lecturer at WU’s School of Allied Health Sciences in Medical Technology and a member of the Center of Excellence for Innovation and Health Products, explained that researchers from Walailak University and Chulalongkorn University studied the effect of extracts from mangosteen and garcinia peels in Nakhon Si Thammarat province and found that the extract from garcinia peel has a high content of phenolics and flavonoids which are well-known as having antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase properties. Tyrosinase is the main enzyme in the creation of melanin in the outermost layer of the skin, causing melasma, freckles, and dark spots. It also inhibits melanin in B16F10 melanocytes stimulated by melanocyte stimulating hormone.

Mangosteen peel has a high content of phenolics and flavonoids, which mainly consist of xanthones and tannins. It has the ability to fight free radicals, the cause of wrinkles, and inhibit bacteria that can cause acne. Therefore, the research team has brought the extracts from these two fruits to develop a nanoemulsion product that increases the efficiency of absorption into the skin without causing irritation to the skin. The product has been certified by dermatologists and tested by 24 volunteers. This work received a silver medal for Inventions and Innovations for Higher Education in 2020 from the National Research Council of Thailand. The results of this research have been also published in Pharmacognosy Journal in 2020.

The research has received funding from WU, Startup Prototype Showcases of the Entrepreneurial University, and Walailak Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development 2020. The research team has used extracts from mangosteen and garcinia peels to develop a facial mask product using the technology of nanoemulsion and the innovation of serum (Nora serum) that, combined, have the ability to reduce wrinkles, freckles, dark spots, add moisture to the skin, and reduce skin problems caused by the accumulation of chemicals without alcohol or parabens.

Besides turning research into a commercial product, this study also adds value to the mangosteen and garcinia peels that are often discarded. “Nora Serum” has already been registered by the FDA. If interested in Nora serum, please contact https://www.facebook.com/morabright.official.
