The GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper App can be easily used with four data collection steps: (1) locate, (2) sample and count mosquito larvae, (3) identify mosquito larvae and (4) decommission breeding sites. Step 1 starts with open your GLOBE Observer MHM app on our cellphone. The app will automatically download the date, time an latitude/longitude of your location. Step 2 is about sample and count mosquito larvae. You use your sampling equipment to obtain a water sample containing mosquito larvae, count the number of larvae in your sample. Step 3 is about taking photograph and identifies larvae. We use a spoon to isolate one larva on the plastic plate; you attach a clip-on microscope to your cellphone camera, line up the lens and take photos of larvae. Step 4 is about elimination of container breeding sites by tipping the container and tossing the water.
The GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper App

The GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper App is a NASA-sponsored project which can be used to combating mosquito borne diseases such as dengue, Zika and malaria. The goals of this MHM app are to see increased mosquito awareness and decreased mosquito-borne disease risk through (1) scientific data collection and analysis, (2) empowerment of actively reducing mosquito risk area by dumping water containers and (3) education young generations and citizen of science about breeding sites of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus which are major vectors carrying dengue and Zika viruses.

The GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper App
